IP ratings are a way of measuring how resistant a device is against water and dust. Some of the best smartphones are rated as IP68.
The first number refers to the protection against dust and sand – 6 is the best you can get, and means it’s dust-tight. The second number is about water resistance. 8 means it can go under water up to 1.5m for 30 minutes, which is the highest water-resistance score a smartphone can get.
You can, but we wouldn't advise rushing into the ocean with it. They're generally designed to work in fresh water, but if your phone does go in salt water, wash it down with clean water as soon as possible.
